20 May.
From: West Mountain shelter
To: Fort Montgomery NY
Mileage: 9.2
Weather: Cloudy AM, sunny PM
Hiker reported rattlesnake on trail on AT leaving shelter, but did not see it. Very alert, though.
Climb up Bear Mountain was more tiring than expected. Concerned about calorie intake.
Music near crest of Bear Mountain turned out to be the Gran Fondo NY 100 mile bike race (https://gfny.com/overview/) at the halfway mark. Had to cross bike route twice. Photos of Perkins Tower at summit.
Descended and passed through Bear Mountain Inn resort along Hessian Lake. Had to return to Inn to check in to reserved cottage room. Inn upgraded me to an Inn room from the cottages. Rinsed clothes and showered, shocked at how emaciated I looked in the mirror, then walked 1.6 miles each way to Fort Montgomery for big BBQ lunch, met Cinnamon Girl and Wilderness Hawk along the way just heading across Hudson River on Bear Mountain Bridge.
Returned via historic fort site and visitor center, crossed pedestrian bridge.
Had ice cream at inn's Hiker Café.
Did not sleep well despite very comfortable bed.
